The Pueblo of Jemez is the only remaining
Towa speaking pueblo in New Mexico.
Its inhabitants include decendants from Pecos Pueblo, just
outside of Santa Fe,
which was inhabited up until the 1830s. The people of Jemez
continue to hold
Pecos Pueblo in great deference and caretake the Pecos Pueblo
site and
keep the original pueblo alive in memory and ceremony. Some
events and
ceremonies are conducted at Pecos Pueblo itself.
Jemez is known for its polished red pottery
and storytellers. Pottery is
often decorated with traditional designs etched into the polished
surface
of the clay. Jemez art also includes basketry, traditional
woven textiles,
embroidery, stone and bronze sculpture, leatherwork, and silver,
gold,
and semiprecious stone jewelry.
Jemez Pueblo hosts an annual arts and crafts
fair during Memorial day
weekend and the second weekend in October at the Jemez Red
Rocks just
north of the Pueblo, and a winter arts and crafts show at
the Pueblo
Civic Center.
